Implications from Learning Theory mentions two significant models that intertwine to ensure students' engagement in a class. The first is Inquiry Instructional Strategy, which empowers students and piques their interest in learning. It is student-centered, with teachers guiding their students’ learning via materials exploration, questioning, and sharing ideas. It encourages problem-solving and critical thinking by having students observe, interpret, and analyze events. The second is the teacher-led Direct Instructional Strategy used to impart defined and prescribed learnings. Some students respond better to this approach for it is based on the concept that straightforward instruction eliminates any misunderstandings and students can learn through repetition.
Whereas, Implications from studies on Violence Prevention in Schools emphasizes the importance of working together to reduce the occurrence of any possible aggressive and disruptive behaviors on school grounds. It highlights the responsibilities of teachers inside and outside the class, teachers must be conscious of all decisions they make and manage to control any anti-social behaviors that might occur. Teachers’ ability to ensure a secure place to learn will surely increase students’ on-task behaviors and involvement in classwork.
As a Biology teacher, it’s helpful to use direct strategy with some instructions whereas others can be better given through the inquiry model. It’s common for students, especially in science, to be introduced to new concepts, definitions, procedures, and materials, and this is where direct instruction comes in helpful. Setting norms, establishing limits, and teaching basic skills can also be done directly with kids. Furthermore, students are expected to have unanswered questions about the world we live in and the creatures that inhabit it from an early age. As a result, it is my responsibility as their instructor to use the inquiry approach to arouse their interest, catch their attention, and assist them in finding solutions that will motivate them to reach higher levels of understanding and wisdom. However, learning cannot take place unless learners feel safe in the classroom. As a teacher, I must establish a positive and secure environment in the class by reviewing safety protocols and observing the emotional states of the students, in which each must respect his or her classmates regardless of their diverse backgrounds, cultures, shapes, and sizes. Students must be able to freely discuss their thoughts, opinions, and points of view while also knowing that they will be valued. When all of this is put together, real learning takes place and students are better prepared to develop a more educated society in the future.
Inquiry learning can be beneficial for science-based learnings, for example:
Use COVID-19 Pandemic as a touchstone to study the science of Immunity.
Prepare an experiment to observe and determine the best growing circumstances for a plant.
Explore different kinds and shapes of leaves through a walk in the playground.
Ask students ‘Why do different eye colors exist?’ to talk about Genes and how they control our shapes and sizes.
The Direct Instruction model can be used to
Establish ground rules for the class.
Address students on how to answer exam questions according to the action verb mentioned
Show a video of immune cells reacting to a virus that has infected the body.
Ask students to make posters and present them in class at the end of each chapter.
Some implications to prevent violence:
Review classroom behavioral expectations on regular basis.
Encourage group work and make sure that students learn to coexist regardless of their differences.
Teach students to respect different points of view, and settle arguments peacefully.
Have high expectations for all students to reduce competition between classmates.
Get involved in students' lives outside the classroom to monitor their emotional status.
Report any sign of violence or threat to the principal.
